C-130E 62-1787 was recently identified as the airplane flown by Captain William R. Caldwell's crew as SPARE 617 over An Loc in April 1972. They were hit by heavy ground fire as they approached the drop zone. Jon Sanders, the engineer, was killed and most of the other crew members were wounded. Captain Caldwell and SSgt. Charles L. Shaub were awarded the Air Force Cross for their actions. 787 is current with the Arkansas Air Guard and is slated to go to the Air Force Museum upon retirement. It'll be on public display at the Yankee Air Museum in Yipsilanti, Michigan July 18-19.

I was told that Google maps shows a C-130 fuselage sitting in a field next to the Brazos River, outside Waco Texas. Sure enough I found it too. It's painted in CG colors and appears to be complete from the 737 forward with part of the center wing box still attached. It almost looks like somebody made it a nice hunting shack! We thought we knew where all the old CG Hercs ended up, but this one has us puzzled. Does anybody have any info on this one? Coordinates are 31.683850, -97.209271 Thanks!

Can any of you guys help me out with getting a picture of what 68-10943 looks like now at Warner Robins? A while back I seen a pic of her with her wings off evidently being used as a ground training aircraft of some sort. I understand it went to depot with a cracked wing box and never came back out. I was asst crew chief on it 84-85, I am in contact with the crew chief from that time period also and a later crew chief on her and I told those guys I seen a pic of her once sitting stripped at W.R.and I would find it again for them. Well, I cant find it. I am hoping maybe some one could share a pic of her in her current state. Thanks As a side note, if anyone reading t…

Hey guys, My father in law told me a story today that I believe to be a myth but wondered if any of you had ever heard it before. Apparently whilst working in South Africa in the early 90's, he was told that the C-130 gearbox required a specific type of grease. This grease had a specific rule (that was apparently provided by the OEM) that women on their "time of the month" could not touch it. If they did, secretions in their sweat (apparently only present at that time of the month), would react with the grease and damage it. I cannot find anything about this online and it frankly sounds way too farfetched to be real. Dan

I don't know if I should laugh or be amazed.A fellow on the crew chief site said he was on a C-130E that was at 61K doing HALO drops.I questioned it and he affirmed that was what he said.I spent quite a few years on Herks,The best altitude I was ever at on one was during Apollo13 support off of Samoa we were at 37500.and literally hanging on the props.Anyone ever seen 61k in a C-130?
