I got a good update on SAAF Herks this weekend from Paul Zethof. I edited it so it would fit.If anyone has more knowledge of the SAAF Herks, would appreciate the info. Especially the whereabouts of 405, or the fates of 410 and 412. Thanks Bob Dear friends: Last weekend I visited the show at Waterkloof, South Africa. There was one C130J-30 from Ramstein and C130B 402 was operating out of Swartkop, we overflew Swartkop but did not see any other C130's over there, no other Herks at Waterkloof, just the stored ones. I was told that 5 are still operational. 405 was flying some months ago. Have attached some pics form 3 stored C130's, 404, 407 and 411 , no sign of 41…

Hi I saw a couple of pictures of a herk or herks at the CIA base at Harvey Point NC. One was on Google Earth At 36 06 07.67N 76-19 33.57W pic dated 3/9/2013. The other was on Bing Maps a similar Herk a little NW of the google map position in front of the hangar. Wondering if they are TDY or if the CIA owns a few herks there? Bob

Fire Fight The row of burning houses looked like a war zone, Lt. Col. Luke Thompson thought as he flew his C-130 low over the Possum Kingdom blaze and dropped thousands of gallons of retardant in the path of the flames. He’d never seen anything like it in 15 years of fighting wildfires. “We were all stunned from seeing the devastation,†says Thompson, chief of aerial firefighting for the 302nd Airlift Wing and a veteran of five deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. But that 2011 Texas blaze was merely a taste of fires to come. The next two summers, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve C-130 tankers battled to save homes near Colorado Springs from equally destr…

Hello all. First let me say that I'm a retired military journalist and rode in 130's on many occasions. It is a fantastic aircraft and I love the Specter version. When I was at Fort Benning we used to watch them hose down Kilo Impact Area with the 40MM, the Vulcans and the 105. It was quite a light show to us grunts on the ground. I didn't know until I did a google that there were any in private hands. I retired from the Army in 2007 as a Master Sgt. and was the Public Affairs Supervisor for the 87th (TS) Division out of Birmingham, AL. Since retiring I have opened a movie logistics company, Black Creek Productions, in Gadsden, AL. http://www.blackcreekproductions.com…

John Harris lost his battle with cancer last night. John was my Form F instructor at Sheppard, in 1970. He shipped out to SEA, and then to Langley. He always filled out the form by hand. No calculator or slip stick. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Pat Wylie

I recall several FE's stories about preventing the pilot(s) from doing something stupid and would like to hear the stories. One of mine is when we were landing and the No. 3 engine flamed out on the flair. The co-pilot grabbed the No. 4 condition lever and I stretched out my right leg over the center console pressing my No. size 13 boot on the co-pilots left hand stating "you've got the wrong engine". He immediately took his hand off the No. 4 condition lever and placed it on the No. 3 lever, shutting the engine down. We all know if I'd hadn't done this aircraft would be on the runway with both right engines and possibly running off the runway had the pilot went to…

While on rotation to south East Asia, I missed my first Christmas away from home. I was sitting on a grassy knoll over looking the ramp at NKP. I was thinking and praying about my family and friends back home. It was a tough morning. My AC, Skip Davenport, walk up behind me and gave me a Red Cross gift bag. It was filled with goodies (love) and a wonderful letter from a small elementary school in Texas. The letter thank me and wished me a Merry Christmas. It meant so much that I'll always cherish it. Well, Clebe McClary, who was Ralph H. Johnson's platoon leader in a battle that won Ralph a CMH, ( the VA Hospital in Charleston is honored with his name) has started a g…

The book is titled "Runway Visions" and I do not have it right here in front of me so I can't give you the author, however, he was a C-130 pilot out of CCK and the book is more or less his recollections of his flying activities in and out of Vietnam. I haven't finished reading it yet, but early on he speaks of the engine start procedure and specifically mentions "turning #2 engine" first. Is that a typo? I recall ALWAYS starting #3 engine first. Any ideas out there?

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, OGDEN — A C-130 performed an emergency landing at Hill Air Force Base on Sunday afternoon. The aircraft declared an inflight emergency and landed around 1 p.m. Sunday, according to a press release from Hill Air Force Base’s Office of Public Affairs. "The aircraft was on a firefighting mission when the air crew became aware of a potential malfunction with the nose landing gear. The crew then executed an emergency landing," said Army Major Beth Smith of U.S. Northern Command. The aircraft sustained minor damage, but none of the six crewmembers on the plane were injured, Smith said. The C-130 came from the 1…

I was at CCK from Mar. 1969 to June 1970, and was in the 314th OMS. I can't remember ever seeing a patch for the 314th. I am sure there was one. If any of you have one from that period, could you post a pic of it so I can add it to my album. Thanks, Ken Carlson

I just found out that one of our Form F instructors, at Sheppard AFB, has had a stroke. He was at Sheppard in the early '70's. When John left Sheppard, he transferred the the 37 TAS. He, also, did all his Form F's by hand, never using a slip stick! Please keep him in his prayers. Pat Wylie

Hello Everyone, I'm running the Compressor performance check , and I have all values of compressor pressure above above a normal sittuation in T.O. 2J - T56-56 SWP 058 04, always in HIGH ZONE. In troubeshotting we have notice that PS3 (CDP) pressure begin taking in the 2 hours position, but in related manual Figure 2 the CDP pressure has to be taken in 11 hours position. I am still waiting for the next engine come from shop to test cell to fix that. My question is the oil tube (HOT OIL) that pass in the diffuser in 2 hours position next to the bleed presure tap (where I take the CDP pressure actually) can affect my CDP reading like that ? 27,58 inHg CIT (TAMB) 74 …
