a prop question: 1 2 3

I have a question for the prop guys: as a crew chief, i was taught that when you feathered a prop, everything was shut off. hyd fluid, oil, elect, fuel, etc. A man by the name of Eric L Haney was a delta force operator and in his book,'inside delta force' he states that on that failed hostage rescue mission in iran in the middle of the desert in 1980, that the 130 he was on,'the engines continued to run,but the props were feathered'.All of my teaching says thats impossible. Or was he mistaken? Did they feather the props and he heard the GTC running? Would the crews even have shut down the eng's in that circumstance? Anyone know any extra info that they are allowed to share? …

J model props 1 2

It seems to me, from most of the pictures on this site, that the J's are parked with their props feathered. The other models are in, if I remember right, ground idle . Is this to keep the wind from turning the engines, since these props have six and in some cases eight blades and look like a food processor??? Inquiring minds want to know.... Giz

First post here. Just found out about the website. Nice. Hypothetical situation. Offstation on a JA/ATT (but within driving distance of home). You get a prop low oil light. Land. Upon inspection, you have the worst prop leak you have ever seen; definitely could be described as an "excessive visible fluid leak". MX tops it off, signs it off, and says that they'd rather you fly it back home and do a prop change there. Do you fly it home? The flight is only 45 minutes...

Good morning! We have a P model here that has a recurring porpoising issue with its AN/AYW-1 Autopilot. This aircraft has had a history of this for several years and in that time the elevator servo has been changed several times, numerous processors, air data sensor has been changed a couple of times, cable tensions checked/adjusted to the elevator servo, and at least two elevator boost packs. We have wrung the wiring out multiple times and also checked all the grounds for corrosion/paint, since another unit had a similar problem caused by painted-over grounds. The elevator trim relays were changed before the aircraft went into depot last year and the aircraft flew g…

We have some #3 engines on different aircrafts that start slow. At a 83F temp, the GTC will start the #3 and come on speed (72%RPM) in 65 seconds. At 102F it will start and come on speed in 76 seconds. The engines are pulling 99% max power efficiency and have known new starters and control valves. The GTC's are putting out from 36 to 39PSI. The blade angles are all set to the low side and are all having 800TIT starts. The problem has been pointing towards the heat here in Arizona and a 2700 ft elevation. Does anyone have an idea how to get the starts down below 70 seconds?

Hey HerkyWorld Got an unusual situation here. Engine starts normal, LSGI torque set correctly. When the LSGI button is pulled to upshift to Normal Ground Idle, torque stabilizes for a moment at +-1200"lb ........ then increases to +-6000"lb, rpm decays to 94%, and TIT increases. Also prop noise indicates the engine is labouring. When LSGI button is pushed in, everything returns to normal. Standing on the blade line, you can see the pitch change occurring. Changed out valve housing, pitchlock regulator, and low pitch stop. Also removed all cannon plugs to remove electronic influence - no good! Stays the same ..... Anyone out there seen this before? any ide…

Someone at work mentioned some kind of Airforce wartime manual. Basicly what things you can do to get the plane going when your getting shot at. An example would be plugging bullet holes in the plane with sharpened bamboo sticks to allow pressurization. Does anyone know this manual I speek of? Also a J model specific book would be awesome. If anyone has a copy of either an H or J book id love to read through it. TIA

As everyone knows many parts on the C-130 get a nickname. We have come across one we aren\'t sure what exactly they are referring to in the discrepancies. We are trying to figure out what a \"Bread Pan\" is. My initial guess is the heatshield behind the engines but when I saw writeups like \"(/) RT WING OWS137 LEADING EDGE OF BREAD PAN U BRACE CRACKED\", \"(/) RIGHT WING, CRACK IN BREAD PAN U-CHANNEL WS 214.\", or \"PATCH IS BAD ON BREAD BASKET AROUND MIDDLE JACKSCREW OF THE INBD FLAP\". Then there is Disc: \"ACFT REQ NEW BREAD BANS\", Corr Action: \"NO LONGER REQUIRED DUE TO INSTALL OF TUBS AND TRACKS\". So now I am not sure what a \"bread pan\", \"bread basket\",…

Ok, this is for all you Mature/Senior Experienced Loadmasters, maybe some of the newer Loadmasters might know. I am looking for the weight of the Troop Door Ladder and the weight limit total of items stored in the Cargo Door. I can remember being told by the Instructors at "The Rock" (beat into my brain). That you could place some items into the cargo door as long as that weight did not exceed, the weight of the items that had been removed. The Instructors always referenced the Troop Door Ladders and other items that had been removed. I know that on some of the special mission birds, the Cargo Doors were stripped of the basic equipment like the ground loading ramps an…

While here at IP school, we visited the FTD (where they train mx how to fix planes without taking them to the flightline). Anyway, at the flight control section, one of my classmates pointed these latches/loops on the vertical stab. We asked around, but no one knows. Any idea?

ENGINE START 1 2

Afternoon, I was wondering if you guys could help me out. During the ENGINE START procedure, the Pilot will state "Turning". When should the Pilot state "Turning"? On our FM, we have the following Caution : "If the propeller does not rotate within 5 seconds after the ENGINE GROUND START switch is placed in START and the start valve open light is illuminated, stop start. Maintenance action is required prior to another start attempt. Repeated attempts to start may result in internal starter damage" We also have the following statement : "The loadmaster will monitor the propeller. If no rotation is observed within 5 seconds after the pilot states, “Turni…

We've deflated the struts completely. We have an individual that suggests banging on the struts with a soft mallett to get any remaining air out of them before we top them off with fluid. He has a ton of experence with many other aircraft and claims he has done that for years. There isn't anything in the books saying to do it but was wondering if there are people out there doing it or if there are any reasons why it shouldn't be done. Thanks!

Hey guys, need some thoughts here. One of our birds is throwing a sh!t-fit, yawing to the left. Initially, props \'n engines were blamed, but after we changed the \'offending\' engine/prop combo and no result, the drawing board was called on. Since then, we have had all the control surfaces off, replaced the rudder, r/h aileron tab and l/h elevator tab. Also the aircraft was put through a full symmetry check. After todays FCF, the pilot told us he had to put in 7° rudder trim to stay straight after T/O, reducing to 4° for level flight, or do some serious pedal work. Also lined up torques at 14k and reduced #3 and #4 to 9400 before yawing stopped. Ai…

Just a few questions. The internal Benson tanks held approx 11,000 pounds? (WC-130H) How many gallons? Also why "Benson", was that the builder? Next, station 245 was measured from where? I seem to remember that it was somewhere in front of the nose. What station were the paratroop doors at? Last, any idea how much hyd fluid was in the utility system at any one time. In motion, not in the resevoir. Thanks Stoney
